Go against your grain, meet another you
I’m a creature of rhythm at home—early mornings, clean living, tea ceremony, same coffee shop, same mat. When I travel, I do the same, landing somewhere and building a little life, then mixing it with art, friends, nature, and night life. I travel slow, living as I do at home, just in a new place.
Last month I did the opposite.
Five flights in five days. Two countries. Four cities. I said yes to everything.
New York with my daughter and old friends. Straight to Iceland for three full days scouting a retreat—two bases, endless wonder. Back to San Francisco for 36 hours: bestie time, a music festival with my brother, and a yoga class with Janet Stone. The next morning, down to LA where my brother lives, to see Air perform Moon Safari at the Hollywood Bowl. Two music nerds grinning like kids.
I almost bailed more than once. Stay longer in Iceland, skip SF, skip LA. But I didn’t. It was ungrounding and perfect. Perspective shifts when you move. I let myself be tired. I rolled out a mat for 30 minutes between lunch and the next gate. I went for a city run at an odd time, weaving through strangers. This was practice, and it felt good.
I love routine, and I love the wild wind of change. Both keep me alive. Sometimes you have to go against your own grain to see what else is in you.
So I’m asking you: what was your comfort-zone flip this week, small or big?
